Western Red Cedar Shingles

Western Red Cedar shingles are sawn wood tiles for use on roofs and walls. They come in three sizes - 16" ("5X"), 18" ("Perfections") and 24" ("Royals").

Each size of shingle comes in one of four grades - No.1 (Blue Label), No.2 (Red Label), No.3 (Black Label) and No.4 (Green Label Undercoursing). Union Pacific Lumber offers 16", 18" and 24" shingles in #1 and #2 grades. Please contact us with your enquiries for #3 or #4 Grades.

Shingle roofs are based on a three layer (3-ply) construction and are packaged accordingly. Four bundles of shingles will cover one square (100 ft) when applied at the recommended amount of overlap, or exposure - 5" for 16" shingles, 5 1/2" for 18" shingles and 7 1/2" for 24" shingles.

Handsplit Tapered Shakes

The master shake maker's experienced eye selects shake blocks from the finest, straightest grain red cedar. Tapersplit shakes require very straight and tight grain. The shake maker uses a mallet to hammer a blade called a froe into the block of wood, splitting a shake about 1/2" thick. As he pries the froe down the length of the block, teasing the new shake away, the wood naturally tapers, creating a thin tip. Flipping the shake block end to end allows a reversal of the tapering effect.
